How did Mahjong become so popular?
Mahjong isn’t just a super niche pastime, it’s a movement. With roots in ancient China, it’s been winning hearts for centuries. But modern brands like The Mahjong Line have totally remixed the vibe with luxury, colorful tiles that make every game feel like a party. And let’s not forget the pandemic—people were craving something new to do at home, then looking for any excuse to gather IRL once it was over. Mahjong is the perfect escape from our stressed and busy world.
Of course, the game wouldn’t be what it is today without the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), which developed the American version in the 1930s. Their iconic annual card and standardized rules have shaped the game into the beloved pastime we know today.

Gather your friends or family and we bring the full learning experience to you! All you need is a table and chairs for everyone to sit around comfortably. Lessons are priced per person and we require a minimum of 4 people and maximum of 16 people for private lessons. Check out our instructors’ availability here.

Mahjong is a 4 player game, however, you can play with 3 and a ghost player (aka Bob/girlfriend/MIA). We do our best to have 4 per table to give everyone the best learning experience.

We offer follow-up lessons, refreshers, and strategy sessions if you’re hooked on the game and committed to getting better and better. We also host group learnings classes that are excellent for guided play and additional practice with other players.
